Cairns, Port Douglas & FNQ

Located at the heart of Great Barrier Reef and Daintree rainforest, Cairns is a vibrant modern city often referred to as the ‘Gateway to The Great Barrier Reef’ and the perfect place to start your North Queensland adventure.  From Cairns, it’s just a short cruise to Port Douglas, home to exclusive resorts, superb restaurants, boutique shopping and much, much more!

Cairns
Cairns has grown from ramshackle port town to stylish modern city and capital of Tropical North Queensland, with a year-round outdoor lifestyle. You’ll feel like you’re on holiday from the minute you arrive. The sun is shining, the air is steamy and palm trees line the streets. Chuck on your swimmers and settle in for a seriously good time!
Don’t let that small-town vibe fool you. With its distinctive multicultural mix, Cairns buzzes with innovative eateries, on-trend bars, stylish boutiques and galleries. Visit laneway bar Three Wolves to sample one of the 50 types of whiskey on the menu, check out the Prawn Star, a prawn trawler turned floating restaurant that serves up some of the freshest local prawns and seafood in the city. Grab a cold one at the impressive Hemingway’s Brewery on

Cairns Esplanade
Cairns Marina

Cairns Wharf in an iconic heritage listed building built in 1915, with uninterrupted views over Trinity Inlet. Stay ashore in absolute luxury at the 5 Star Crystalbrook Riley located in the heart of the newly upgraded $28 million dollar Cairns Esplanade Dining Precinct.
Dock at Cairns Marlin Marina, a state of the art floating marina in the heart of the city with 261 berths accommodating Superyachts up to 140m in length. With its excellent central location and first class facilities, the Marlin Marina is also home to Australia largest tourism and game fishing fleets.

The city is tucked between two of Tropical North Queensland’s greatest natural treasures – the marine playground of the Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforest, which means adventure is never far away.

The Waterfall Circuit
For the ultimate land-based excursion and day trip from Cairns, look no further than the Waterfall Circuit!
Head up the Gillies Range. First stop is The Teahouse on Lake Barrine, part of the Crater Lakes National Park. Enjoy award winning Devonshire scones and Tea on the veranda of the heritage building overlooking the water filled volcanic crater.
10 minutes down the road is the quaint country village of Yungaburra. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot a platypus or tree kangaroo. Make your way through the picturesque green rolling hills of the Atherton Tablelands and Dairy Country to the tiny outpost of Milla Milla. Follow the signs to Milla Milla Falls. The heritage-listed 18m plunge waterfall tumbles into an inviting waterhole fringed by tall gums and tree ferns and is the centrepiece of the Waterfall Circuit – it’s easy to see why they’re Australia’s most photographed cascades!

Ellinjaa Falls

A short drive further will find you at Zillie Falls and then Ellinjaa Falls. Venture into the water to find the ledge hidden behind the falls where you can sit and enjoy nature in all its glory. Head back down the range in time for a stroll along the Esplanade and sundowners at the Salt House. Enjoy dinner at one of Cairns world class restaurants such as Tamarind or C’est Bon. Sample uniquely Australian cuisine – crocodile, kangaroo or emu at Ochre or simply enjoy dinner on the aft deck overlooking Chinaman Creek.

With so many stunning waterfalls and freshwater swimming spots in the area such as Wallaman Falls, Crystal Cascades, Davies Creek, Lake Eacham and Emerald Creek to name but a few, you’ll have to tell the Captain to spend a couple more days in Port whilst you explore everything this truly magical part of Australia has to offer.

For the Adrenaline Junkies
If you like to get the adrenaline pumping, Skypark by AJ Hackett offers an unmissable experience. ‘Drop by’ for a bungee jump at the only place you can in the whole of Australia! More faint-hearted family members can enjoy the giant swing or have a relaxing drink at the bar while they watch you leap. For an even more exhilarating adventure, head south of Cairns and book a tandem skydive on Mission Beach. Fly over one of North Queensland’s most beautiful beaches in a 60 second free fall, reaching speeds of more than 200kph! With a dedicated camera man to record your jump experience, you can be sure this memory will last forever. From Mission Beach, join a white-water rafting expedition on the Tully River and get wet and wild in one of the most exciting tours North Queensland has to offer.

Fitzroy Island Summit Walk

Fitzroy Island
Just a short 45minutes steam from Cairns Marina, Fitzroy Island is a tropical paradise of rainforest and coral beaches within the calm sheltered waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Almost completely surrounded by coral reef makes Fitzroy an excellent place for snorkelling. Head to turtle point to watch the local Green Sea Turtles feast and if you’re lucky you may even spot a Manta Ray glide on by.
Tackle the Lighthouse track up to the lighthouse, which offers spectacular views of the ocean, out to Green Island and in winter, migrating humpback whales. Continue up to the island’s 269m summit where slabs of granite and windswept casuarina trees frame magnificent views over the island, surrounding reefs and mainland.

Explore the rainforested Secret Garden track or walk to Nudey Beach to relax in the shade, swim and for more snorkelling. Previously ranked #1 in Australia’s best beach awards, this stunning spot is not to be missed!
Education and conservation are also at the heart of this beautiful island resort – learn about turtle conservation at the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where they rehabilitate sick and injured turtles before releasing them back into the ocean.

Green Island
Green Island is a beautiful rainforest covered coral cay, located 15NM from Cairns and 10NM from Fitzroy Island. While only 12 hectares in size, Green Island is surrounded by an astonishing 710 hectares of reef.

fitzroy island nudey beach
Green Island

Formed around 6000 years ago, the island is made up of sand sediments, animal and coral deposits and out of the 300 sand cays on the Great Barrier Reef, it is the only one with a rainforest.
Snorkel or dive the coral gardens surrounding this tropical National Park island paradise, exploring the abundant marine ecosystems teaming with life. They are so close to the shore that you can snorkel directly off the beach! Walk the nature trails around the island to discover the colourful bird life and unique unspoilt rainforest that call the island home.
For a night off the boat, stay ashore at the luxurious and eco-sensitive Green Island Resort. Stroll through the lush cool rainforest, laze on white coral sands or lie by the resorts inviting swimming pool, the choice is yours!

Cairns Northern Beaches
For your Cairns beach fix back on the mainland, head to the Northern Beaches, a string of sleepy seaside villages 15 minutes from the city. They are a favourite with locals and each has its own unique character, like the kite-surfing hub of Yorkeys Knob, family-friendly Trinity, or the idyllic Palm Cove.
Famed as much for its palm trees as its 500-year-old melaleuca trees, Palm Cove is the ultimate boutique beachside getaway, perfectly located between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Glamorous resorts and day spas share the shores with a mixture of fine dining, cafes and a couple of ice cream parlours thrown in for good measure. Often with morning seas as calm as a placid lake, a sunrise paddle to Double Island will sure to be a trip highlight.
Stay ashore in luxury at the Alamanda and indulge your senses at the highly acclaimed Nu Nu’s for sunset cocktails and dinner right on the beach.

Great Barrier Reef Drive

Great Barrier Reef Drive
From Palm Cove, it’s just a short 40 minute cruise to Port Douglas along The Great Barrier Reef Drive, one of the most scenic costal roads in Australia. Admire the beauty of the rainforest-clad mountains as they descend towards deserted beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. Feel the excitement build as you climb the mountain range towards Rex Point Lookout for a spectacular 180-degree view over the Coral Sea. A popular spot to watch hang-gliders take off while you stretch your legs and take in the awe-inspiring scenery. From there it is a further 25kms of unrivalled coastal views weaving between the dual World Heritage areas of the Wet Tropics Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef, as well as vast sugar cane fields along the way.

Port Douglas
When the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort opened in 1987, it transformed Port Douglas from a sleepy fishing village into a tropical playground for the rich and famous. In three decades, the town has become the region’s high-end resort hub. But even with all that luxury, Port Douglas hasn’t lost its classic Queensland charm and it’s still the kind of place where you’ll be more at home in board shorts than a ball gown – the perfect place to escape and unwind.

The famous Four Mile Beach runs along the edge of Port Douglas, a pretty stretch of golden sand that’s remained largely undeveloped. Flop on the sand, swim in the warm waters of the Coral Sea or explore the rock pools at the beach’s northern end.

Macrossan Street is the town’s main artery, with more than 60 restaurants and cafes within walking distance. Settle in for house-made gnocchi at Salsa Bar, a smorgasbord of tapas at Seabean,

Port Douglas Superyacht Marina

or the ultimate brekkie at The Little Larder. After dark, Macrossan Street comes to life with the best nightlife often bouncing between The Courthouse Hotel and Paddy’s Irish Pub, or experience the legendary Cane Toad Racing at IronBar!

At the newly redeveloped Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina you’ll find some more of Port Douglas’ top eateries, including Hemingway’s Brewery where locally brewed beer (made with water from Mossman Gorge) is paired with a deliciously casual menu. Grab a spot under the striped umbrellas at Barbados, a chic cocktail bar and restaurant overlooking the Dickson Inlet, serving tapas-style small plates, fresh seafood and pizza. Get a table at On the Inlet at 5pm to watch George (a 250-kilo groper), be fed and then stay for your own dinner of a towering seafood platter.

Port Douglas is one of the best golfing destinations in Australia, with three exceptional 18-hole courses close to town. Choose between the Palmer Sea Reef, the Mirage Country Club and the Mossman Golf Club.
Before you leave, be sure to also check out the markets held every Sunday morning. Producers come from all over the region to sell jewellery, crafts, clothes, pottery, fresh fruit and more underneath the ancient giant Raintrees.

15 minute drive north of Port Douglas is beautiful Cooya Beach (Kuyu Kuyu), a special place and traditional fishing grounds of the Kuku Yalanji people and home to Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours. For an experience you wont forget, join one of the Kubirri Warra guides on their beach, mudflat and mangrove walk and hunt for your own food, including mud crabs, fish and crustaceans.
Learn how to throw a spear, hunt whilst stalking and observing wildlife and how to find plants used for food and medicine whilst being educated about their traditional country on the far north east coast of Australia.

Port Douglas
Low Isles Boat trip

Low Isles
Situated just 8NM northeast of the of Port Douglas, the Low Isles are the ideal spot for an inner reef adventure. Made up of two small coral cay islands surrounded by 55 acres of reef, Low Isles make the perfect destination for day trips from Port Douglas, or to drop anchor and explore while cruising up the coast on your North Queensland adventure.
The two small islands, Low Isles and Woody Island, are separate, but share the common reef and are considered an important indigenous cultural site for both the local KuKu Yalanji and Yirraganydji tribes.
There are 150 different species of hard corals in the waters surrounding the Isles, although these are dominated by 15 species

of soft corals. If you look closely, the feathery tentacles of the soft corals can often be seen collecting tiny food particles from the water around them. Living amongst the corals is a large variety of fish, molluscs, sea cucumbers and other animals. Colourful blue, green and purple parrotfish are a common sight as well as angelfish, damselfish, clownfish, trevally, sweetlip and moon wrasse, to name a few. In addition, the island has a prolific turtle population with underwater sightings common to snorkellers.
Feel the sand between your toes as you snorkel and swim straight from the beach in the shallower waters surrounding the island; relax under the thatched umbrellas or explore the island to find the heritage-listed lighthouse and museum that has been operational since 1878.

Sailaway Low Isles tour

Mossman Gorge
A short 20-minute drive inland from Port Douglas, set among the cane fields and at the foot of the mountain you’ll find the picturesque to town of Mossman.
The Mossman Gorge Centre is the gateway to the oldest rainforest in the world. Take a dip in the picture perfect sheltered swimming hole where the pristine rainforest water flows around spectacular granite boulders and a sandy beach forms a perfect entry point.

The Daintree
At nearly 180 million years old, the Daintree Rainforest is home to some truly ancient landscapes. Untouched by the artificial structures so common to public tourist destinations, it offers an idyllic retreat for those seeking an escape from the hubbub of modern city life.

The Daintree is a haven for extraordinary biological diversity, including plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Take a guided walking tour past mountain ranges, streams, waterfalls, lagoons, and gorges and keep an eye out for the unique southern cassowary, Bennett’s tree kangaroo, spotted-tail quoll, buff breasted paradise kingfisher, and Ulysses butterfly.

For a true taste of adventure, step aboard a croc tour and spot the giant Australian crocodiles lounging amidst the mangroves on the Daintree River. Visit the Daintree Discovery Centre and take in outstanding views of the rainforest from its 23m high canopy tower or 125m long skywalk.

Daintree Rainforest Cassowary

The kids are sure to love the vibrant aquarium and Jurassic experience, complete with animated dinosaurs. Dine on the finest locally sourced Australian cuisine at the celebrated Julaymba Restaurant. Then, enjoy a unique jackfruit or sapodilla-flavoured dessert at the Daintree Ice Cream Company.

10 Day Far North QLD Itinerary

Courtesy of Captain Paul on M/Y EVOLUTION

Day 1
Arrive at The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port Douglas where EVOLUTION’s crew will be awaiting your arrival and welcome you onboard with light refreshments and canapes before giving you a guided tour of Australia’s most lavish Superyachts and your home for the next 10 days.
EVOLUTION will depart her berth and head into the Coral Sea for a short steam to our first destination. The Low Isles, situated 8NM northeast of Port Douglas are a pristine Marine Sanctuary. Made up of two islands, one a low mangrove covered island and the other a tropical paradise with palm trees and a coral sand beach that slip into lush tropical warm waters. With an amazing reef system abundant with tropical fish and Green Sea Turtles, the island is great to stroll around before a snorkel amongst the amazing coral garden. Return to EVOLUTION for sunset cocktails before your private Chef creates a culinary experience like no other, incorporating a combination of the best quality fresh produce from Australian oceans and paddocks.

Day 2
Awake in paradise to a breakfast made up of fresh tropical fruits and orders cooked to your liking before EVOLUTION weighs anchor and continues northeast to Undine Reef. With a large white sand shoal if the tide is high, the crew will take you onto the sand to explore the shallow reef edges and snorkel in the safe protected waters.
If you would like to try a spot of fishing, Captain Paul will take you on a guided fishing adventure aboard the 30ft Grady-White centre console. Species you could expect to catch are some of Australia’s best, such as Coral Trout, Red Emperor and Spanish Mackerel. On return your private onboard chef will prepare your freshly caught catch for lunch or dinner – it doesn’t get any fresher than that!
EVOLUTION will then head East to the outer reef and to our nights anchorage at St Crispin Reef. Once night falls you’ll be amazed at the sight of thousands of tiny bait fish schooling up in the underwater lights and the larger fish species attracted to an easy supper!

Day 3
Morning will be spent steaming a short distance to Agincourt Reef for a day’s diving and snorkelling.
Agincourt had over 10 world class dive sites on one reef system ranging from beginner to advanced. The close proximity to the continental shelf ensures great visibility with an amazing array of marine life including Brain and Boulder Coral, big plates, Groper, Coral Trout, Giant Clams and Green Sea Turtles to name a few.
Humpback wales are a common and always breathtaking sight from July to September around the Great Barrier Reef.
After s day’s diving we navigate further North to the Ribbon Reef system for our nights anchorage at Ribbon #3.

After breakfast Capt Paul can take you on one of his personal favourite dive sites not far from the anchorage to circum-navigate two large bommies (Large Reef Outcrops). You’ll experience an amazing abundance of fish life, bottom structure and reef species that makes you feel like you’re diving in your very own personal aquarium!
On return enjoy yet another freshly prepared lunch before we set a Northerly course to our next destination, Lizard Island, which lays 110nm North or Port Douglas.
The crew can take you ahead to explore, snorkel and fish the many reefs as we make our way north, or just relax for the afternoon and take in the sights of passing reefs and playful dolphins riding the bow.

Day 5
The Blue Lagoon is an impressive sight when first arriving at Lizard Island with its deep blue coloured tropical water at a depth of around 10 meters. The south-eastern wind ward side of the island on clam days is a great place to snorkel in safe sheltered waters with the reef edges abundant with fish and coral life. Watsons Bay on the opposite side of the island is a sheltered anchorage from the south easterly trade winds that frequent the area from April to September. This is also home to some great diving with Giant Groper, small reef sharks and coral gardens.
Today can be spent enjoying EVOLUTION’s many water toys in the sheltered waters and exploring the many walks on the Island including Cooks Lookout. Walk or take the tender to snorkel The Blue Lagoon, swim or laze on the white sandy beach for the afternoon with a beach hamper and refreshments prepared by the Chef.
Sunset drinks at Lizard Islands Marlin Bar are a must whilst visiting the area, before returning to a lavishly prepared gastronomic experience back on board.

Day 6
The Cod Hole at Ribbon Reef #10 just 10nm from Lizard Island is a must do dive, with a large school of friendly giant Potato Cod that are always happy to keep you company on the dive. Great photo opportunities are sure to arise with the friendly Giants always happy to get in close for a pic together with the large Maori Wrasse, Red Bass, Emperor and many other species.
In the afternoon we will return to Lizard Island and the shelter of Watsons Bay anchorage.
As the sun sets, large Queensland Groper and small reef sharks will gather for your entertainment in the underwater lights with darting Giant Trevally on show, all hoping for a stray fish carcass to come their way.

Day 7
Early morning EVOLUTION will weigh anchor and head South to the historic port of Cook Town. The tender can take you ashore to explore the streets and surrounding areas. A half hour drive from Cook Town, take a dip in the beautiful cool freshwater swimming hole Isabella Falls, or maybe a visit to James Cook Museum.
Lunch or a quick beer at a real iconic Australian pub – The Lions Head Hotel, a tin and timber dwelling that was established back in 1875, a real piece of Australiana!
A sight-seeing trip to the Grassy Hill is a must with the Coral Sea stretching to the North, East and South, with Reefs dotting the horizon and the Endeavor River running inland.
At sunset take the tender along the river to see if we can spot any of the local river inheritance such as Saltwater Crocs, or catch a Barramundi for dinner.

Day 8
First light will see EVOLUTION steaming the short distance South to Hope Island, a beautiful little island surrounded by stunning reefs and a great picnic area. EVOLUTION’s crew will have water toys waiting on the beach for you, whilst Chef organises a beach side lunch under the fig and coconut trees ashore. The afternoon can be spent lazing on the top deck or a spot of fishing or diving.
Sundowner cocktails on the bow before dinner and an evening relaxing on this beautiful Superyacht.

Day 9
Today EVOLUTION will anchor off Snapper Island at the entrance to the Daintree River.
The Crew will tender you up the river and deliver you to the Daintree’s top operator for a personally guided eco tour of the amazing river system and cruise through the oldest Rainforest on the planet. The tour will also include Crocodile and Snake handling and Exotic fruit tasting.
On your return EVOLUTION will weigh anchor and return to Low Island for our final nights anchorage. After sundowner cocktails, your private Chef will prepare an authentic Ozzy BBQ with top cuts of meat and the freshest seafood available.

Day 10
This morning can be spent strolling or snorkelling Low Island, or maybe a Paddle Board or Kayak to shore. If the weather is favourable, Captain Paul can take you east to a great dive site he knows, maybe a chance to catch a painted lobster for lunch!
On return, lunch will be prepared and served as EVOLUTION cruises back to Port with what brings an end to our adventure for now, with memories that will last a lifetime. Until next time!
