Home to 155 islands, Moreton Bay is Brisbane’s 1000km² aquatic playground.
Hand-feed the wild dolphins at Tangalooma Island Resort, surf and fish at Stradbroke Island, or cruise the clear blue waters of Horseshoe Bay.
Described as the “Gem of South East Queensland”, Moreton Island itself is an extraordinary island getaway with fantastic scenery, huge sand dunes, glassy lakes, rocky outcrops, wild forests, and stunning beaches.
Located just north of the Tangalooma Island Resort are the Tangalooma Wrecks, a cluster of ships scuttled by the Queensland Government between 1963 and 1984 to provide a safe anchorage spot for recreational boat owners on the eastern side of Moreton Bay. With Coral forming in and around the wrecks, it provides a haven for over 100 species of fish and marine life.
Peel Island is a small, heritage-listed island and national park located just 4km from the mainland at Cleveland. The remote island paradise is enjoyed by locals and visitors and can only be accessed by boat. Horseshoe Bay on the southern side is the most popular beach on the island, and the only one with sand. It has some spectacular sandstone outcrops to explore as well as crystal clear waters to cruise.
For keen snorkelers, check out the historic shipwreck in Platypus Bay as well as the Harry Atkinson Artificial Reef, which was constructed to the north of Peel Island. Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay are both pristine, calm spots for swimming. Keep an eye out for Dugongs, wobbegongs, turtles, and dolphins which frequent the waters around the island.
Discover the beautiful body of water known as the Gold Coast Broadwater. Enjoy wonderful conditions for boating year-round thanks to protection offered by the Spit, South Stradbroke Island and the little jewel that is Wavebreak Island – a man-made island created in 1985. Its name gives away its purpose as it was created to stabilise and protect the area from land erosion. The island also helps prevent the ocean swell from coming into the Broadwater and provides a safe place for boats to get protection from the winds.
A popular anchorage for day charters from the Gold Coast, Wavebreak Island has stunning views back of the city skyline, yet still feels a million miles away.
South Stradbroke Island, or ‘South Straddie’ as she is affectionately know by the locals, is a beautiful and natural wonderland offering superb surfing, swimming and bushwalking and is one of the few places on Australia’s east coast where you can view both the sun rise and set. There’s an abundance of native wildlife among this 1800-hectare conservation park which is ideal for hiking, rock climbing and ocean fishing. Archaeologists have found evidence of an indigenous population living on Stradbroke Island for at least 21,000 years prior to the arrival of Captain Arthur Phillip’s First Fleet, and when you’re on the island you get a sense that the majority of it hasn’t changed too much over that time.
For theme park aficionados, the Gold Coast is the place to be.
